IUI

What is IUI?

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a simple and minimally invasive fertility treatment that involves placing specially prepared sperm directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation. By bypassing the cervix and placing the sperm closer to the fallopian tubes, IUI increases the chances of sperm reaching and fertilizing the egg, leading to pregnancy.

Who Can Benefit from IUI?

IUI may be recommended for individuals or couples facing various fertility challenges, including:

  • Mild male factor infertility
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Cervical factor infertility
  • Ovulation disorders
  • Donor sperm insemination
  • Couples using donor sperm for genetic reasons

    FAQ

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing specially prepared sperm directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. This procedure aims to increase the chances of sperm reaching and fertilizing the egg, thus facilitating pregnancy.

In natural conception, sperm must travel through the cervix, into the uterus, and then into the fallopian tubes to fertilize an egg. With IUI, the sperm is placed directly into the uterus, bypassing the cervix and shortening the distance the sperm needs to travel to reach the egg.

IUI may be recommended for couples or individuals experiencing various fertility challenges, including unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, cervical factor infertility, ovulation disorders, and those using donor sperm.

Before the procedure, the sperm sample undergoes a process called sperm washing, where the sperm is separated from the semen and concentrated. This preparation removes seminal fluid and non-motile sperm, leaving behind the most viable sperm for insemination.

IUI is typically performed around the time of ovulation, which is determined through various methods such as ovulation predictor kits, ultrasound monitoring, or blood tests. Timing is crucial to ensure that the egg and sperm are present in the reproductive tract simultaneously.

IUI is a relatively painless procedure and is usually well-tolerated by most patients. Some individuals may experience mild cramping during or after the procedure, similar to menstrual cramps. However, discomfort is typically minimal and short-lived.

Success rates for IUI vary depending on factors such as the age of the female partner, the underlying cause of infertility, and the quality of the sperm used. Generally, IUI success rates range from 10% to 20% per cycle, with multiple cycles often recommended to maximize the chances of conception.

IUI is a safe procedure with minimal risks. The most common risks include mild discomfort, spotting, or a small risk of infection. Additionally, there is a slight risk of multiple pregnancies due to the stimulation of ovaries with fertility medications.

The number of IUI cycles recommended varies depending on individual circumstances. Some couples may achieve pregnancy after one or two cycles, while others may require upto three cycles to be successful.
